About Us

History

Browns Creek Sailing Association is located on Lake Guntersville at  North Alabama Sailing Marina.  Thirty minutes south of Huntsville Alabama, one hour north of Birmingham, Alabama, just off Highway 69 on the west side of Guntersville, Alabama.   The club, founded in 1975, is composed of sailors of all levels of seamanship who enjoy improving and honing their sport through racing, cruising and socials.  You do not have to have a boat slip at the marina to be a member of the association.

Racing

The club sponsors a variety of sailing races from our marina during all seasons and participates in races at other club’s locations. There are several regattas which are two days of racing with a dinner social on the evening of the first day of racing. We sponsor the Great River Race in the month of October which is a 24 hour race covering about 65 miles of river.  It’s the longest inland river race in the country.

Cruising & Social

The club also plans social and cruising events. We have monthly cruises to various spots along Guntersville Lake. We enjoy nature cruises such as, the bat cave, a winter eagle watch, fall leaves along the river, and summer raft-ups for watching the fireworks on the Fourth or enjoying ice cream and swimming. In the late fall, we have our annual banquet, always lots of fun with great door prizes.  We are a family oriented club, so if you’re in the area, we invite you to check us out.  We try to plan for one social a month themed around whatever holiday is happening at the time.

Learn To Sail

Every spring we conduct a 2 weekend long learn-to-sail course taught by our licensed Captain Susan Wilson who is also a certified sailing instructor.  Classes are taught on our fleet of Catalina 22s.  We cover everything from seamanship, navigation, safety, docking, outboard motor operation, rigging and of course sailing all points of sail.   Graduation is after the last Sunday class of the second weekend and includes dinner for all.

Our Fleet of Boats for Members Only

Don’t have a boat?  No problem.  We have a fleet of various dinghies plus our three Catalina 22s.   The dinghies are available on a first come first serve basis and our Catalina’s are available to rent for the day.  More information is contained under the Membership Section of this site.
