Browns Creek Sailing Association

44th   Great River Race

September 27-29, 2013

Lake Guntersville, Alabama

The Great River Race, now in its 44th year, is one of the longest inland sailing races in the United States. The long course covers a distance of about 70 miles along the beautiful Tennessee River and Alabama Mountain Lakes area.  The short course covers about 17 miles. This endurance race is open to all sailing vessels with an enclosed cabin and auxiliary propulsion. A working radio capable of monitoring and communicating on the marine radio bands is required to participate in this race.

The race shall be governed by the International Sailing Federation “Racing Rules of Sailing for 2013-2016”. The 2010 Portsmouth Handicapping System (which is currently the most recent one available online) shall be employed to handicap this event with spinnaker and headsail adjustment factors. Handicaps will be based on Portsmouth base (DP-N) numbers.

There will be two courses, with a spinnaker class and a non-spinnaker class for each course. Awards shall be given in each of the four classes. The time limit for the long course shall be 24 hours. The time limit for the short course shall be 9 hours. Also, a Persistence Award will be awarded to the last yacht completing the most laps of the long course that did not win a class trophy.
