BCSA Cruise: Bluffs, Bats & a Big Damn Lock

🛶 BCSA Cruise: Bluffs, Bats & a Big Damn Lock
📅 Saturday, September 6th
⛵ Departing NASM at 9:00 AM sharp-ish
This ain’t your average sail-around-the-buoys Saturday. This is a full-day, down-the-river, through-the-lock, raft-up-with-a-view kind of day. We’re talking real miles, real scenery, and yes—real bats.
🗺️ THE PLAN (a.k.a. organized chaos):
- Shove off from NASM at 0900
- Lock through the Guntersville Dam like absolute champions
- Sail downriver to Painted Bluff
- Raft up for lunch and scenic gawking
- Return through the lock before dark, or cry trying
- Watch the bats emerge from Hambrick Cave at dusk
- Optional overnight anchoring at Pirate’s Cove (BYO rum)
🎨 PAINTED BLUFF
This 350-foot vertical cliff towers over the Tennessee River and is basically Alabama’s version of the Grand Canyon… if the Grand Canyon had prehistoric Native American rock art and zero tourists. These bluffs have ancient petroglyphs that date back 6,000 years—so please don’t Sharpie your name on them.
This spot is sacred, stunning, and the kind of place you’ll want to pretend you discovered (you didn’t, but we’ll let you lie on Instagram).
🦇 HAMBRICK BAT CAVE
Home to 60,000+ gray bats (all totally blind but somehow better at navigation than you), this TVA-protected cave delivers a dusk spectacle as clouds of bats swarm the skies in search of dinner. It’s weirdly beautiful, slightly creepy, and smells… earthy. Just don’t scream. They hate that.
💡 GUNTERSVILLE DAM
Built in 1939 by the TVA, this 94-foot-tall dam holds back more water than you did after those dockside margaritas. We’ll lock through together like a fleet of pros (or at least like people who read the group text). It’s a great chance to learn the ropes—literally—and it’s a total rite of passage.
💬 This cruise is perfect for:
- First-timers nervous about the lock
- Bluff lovers
- Bat enthusiasts
- People who enjoy saying, “Well actually, that’s a federally protected species…”
- Anyone who thinks sunscreen is for the weak (it’s not—wear it)
📣 Pack snacks, Lunch, Dinner, ice, binoculars, cameras, and some healthy fear of nature.
